We Did It!
After working through not one, not two but THREE storms, my latest project is finally complete! Faux rock and concrete makes for a cosy creature enclosure and I’m really pleased with the way this one turned out, but can you guess who’s going to be living here…?
Well this enclosure is actually for Asian Short Clawed Otters, and they are the sweetest little fellas!
The smallest of all the Otter species, these guys are usually swamp and river dwellers, feasting on crabs, snails and small fish.
These otters form pairs for life, and in the wild Asian short-clawed otters face increasing threats to their survival. Wetlands where they live are being taken over by us humans and some otters are hunted down for their skins and organs which are used in traditional Chinese medicines. Their numbers are going down and they are now listed as one of the most vulnerable species, so creating a wonderful new enclosure to protect these guys and make them feel happy and secure was the aim of the job, and I’m happy to say they seem thrilled with the result!
